In no particular order, here are just a few things kids will, at some point in their first few years, do for the first time:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Play with non-siblings\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ride a bike\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tie their shoe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn their address and phone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write their name<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start school<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend time away from parents and family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lose a tooth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Answer the phone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chew gum<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go on vacation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See a parade<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin their knee<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See fireworks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those are just a tiny fraction of milestones in a child\u2019s life. There are so many more it\u2019s nearly impossible to think of them all. For quite a few years, almost everything a child does is being experienced for the first time, and that has to be at least a little unsettling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fear of the Unknown<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many adults who may have to speak in front of an audience, start a new job, or move to a new city can be plagued by fear of the unknown. Not to mention common, inexplicable, lifelong fears that many adults experience, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of the dark<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of heights<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of hypodermic needles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of lightning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of bugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of snakes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of flying<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of enclosed spaces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of strangers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If adults can experience so much anxiety, think of how kids must feel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids have a lot of things to be afraid of. Not only do many kids fear all the unknowns that lie ahead in their lives, but many also fear imagined or illogical unknowns such as bad dreams, monsters in the closet or under the bed, home invaders, or natural disasters like hurricanes, volcanos, or an asteroid similar to the one that brought about the end of the dinosaurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents can individually address each instance of a child\u2019s fear; however, a better approach\u2014and one that will serve them for the rest of their lives\u2014is to address fear in general by teaching children to have courage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Teaching Courage<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winston Churchill said, \u201cFear is a reaction. Courage is a decision.\u201d Kids can overcome fear if they learn how to make courageous decisions and choose to act in courageous ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children should understand that fear is a survival instinct that goes back to prehistoric times. Seeing a rattlesnake in one\u2019s path can be frightening, and that fear prevents us from walking up to the snake and getting bitten. Like Winston Churchill said, fear of the snake is one\u2019s reaction. However, instead of running around in circles and screaming or being so scared one is unable to move, courage tells us that we can back away and walk around the snake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or a child is going to the doctor for a checkup and is afraid because they\u2019re not certain what the doctor is going to do. Courage should intervene and tell the child that the job of a doctor is to help people, not hurt them. Even if they have to get an inoculation, the split second the injection takes is nothing compared to getting tetanus, chicken pox, or the measles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The examples of the snake and the checkup have something in common with every fear we humans experience: we can out-think our fears because the enemy of fear is rational thought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rational thought tells us what we should and shouldn\u2019t do. We don\u2019t stick our hand in a fire because we\u2019re afraid; it\u2019s because rational thought tells us it\u2019s a stupid idea.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenge for parents is that we don\u2019t want our children to be afraid, and so we try to come to the rescue. If there\u2019s a monster under the bed, mom or dad will look under the bed and report that it\u2019s monster free. And that\u2019s reassuring to kids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem with checking for monsters is that kids will soon be under the impression that, to alleviate any fear, just call mom or dad and they\u2019ll take care of everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be better to find out what makes the child afraid? Why do they think there\u2019s a monster? Have they ever seen one? Is it more a fear of the dark? Once a parent understands a child\u2019s fear, they\u2019ll be able to work out a strategy for the child to deal with the fear on their own, which will require courage\u2014and rational thought\u2014but will be much more rewarding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding the courage to combat fears of concrete things like a snake, checkup, fire, or the dark, may be easier than finding the courage to change behavior. For example, the friends of your child are vaping and are trying to convince your child that they should start vaping too. It will take courage for your child to decline the offer, but others will respect them for standing their ground. More importantly, they\u2019ll respect themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Courage may take many forms, including the courage to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand up for one\u2019s beliefs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand up for those who can\u2019t stand up for themselves<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand up to those who are mistreating others<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak up when something isn\u2019t right<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try new things<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persist in the face of failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be a leader or role model<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow one\u2019s own path<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think independently and be oneself\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help kids learn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psy-ed.com\/wpblog\/child-courage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to be courageous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, parents can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-best-childrens-books.org\/books-about-courage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children\u2019s literature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to demonstrate courageous acts. Many books are strictly meant to teach lessons of bravery and courage; others, like Hans Christian Andersen\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Snow Queen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the story upon which <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is based\u2014have a main character who is courageous because it\u2019s part of their character.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get ideas from lesson plans on courage. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onecommunityglobal.org\/courage-lesson-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has some great ideas for lessons in every subject area. Many are for older students, but several can be repurposed for younger children.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell them your own stories of courage. Relate personal experiences in your life when you showed courage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share a sense of adventure. Accompany your child on a journey to a new place, trying a new food, or trying a new activity. Show them that facing the unknown can have its rewards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.inspiremykids.com\/2014\/great-quotes-for-kids-about-courage-and-bravery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quotes on courage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from famous people. Discuss the lives of the people being quoted and the courageous things they\u2019ve done.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Courage is a tough concept for kids. They often think courage involves grand gestures or daring acts. It\u2019s important that they know courage can be shown in small ways like standing\u00a0 up for a person being picked on, doing something alone for the first time, trying a new food, or speaking in front of the class.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children that learn to be brave and courageous when they\u2019re young will carry that with them throughout their lives, and their lives will be richly rewarding as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A child\u2019s life is filled with firsts.
