Every April is National Poetry Month, and we should all take some time to appreciate the many different forms of poetry from ballads to odes, from limericks to haikus, each based on the format, rhyme scheme, or subject matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/national-poetry-month\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Poetry Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was established in 1996 to highlight the legacies and achievements of American poets and has become the largest literary celebration in the world. Each April, literary organizations come together to increase the attention towards poetry and support poets and poetry. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy of American Poets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was formed in 1934, was the driving force behind National Poetry Month, being inspired by the success of Black History Month in February and Women\u2019s History Month in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written poetry has been around for at least<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_poetry\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4,600 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The earliest written sample of poetry dates to southern Mesopotamia where the Sumerians wrote the first poetry on clay tablets, which still exist today. The oral history of poetry goes back even further because it was an easy way to remember and transmit cultural knowledge, such as myths, agricultural instructions, and historical events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids probably start out loving poetry from the first time they hear a Mother Goose nursery rhyme, and later, by reading <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cat in the Hat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Eggs and Ham<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And yet, as they get older, many children seem to lose interest in poetry. As adults, we should do everything possible to change that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why is Poetry Important?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry not only develops <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vooks.com\/7-ways-poetry-enhances-early-literacy-skills\/?srsltid=AfmBOopK0OIUQXwtCpBNbJMtztA54MbVsr9OhGPf7PC4IqJWdqJ2Vfqq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">language skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also has rhythm and sounds that work together for more effective communication. Many of the world\u2019s greatest speakers\u2014Martin Luther King, Jr.; Winston Churchill; Franklin Roosevelt; Barack Obama\u2014have a rhythm and musicality to their speech which increases the power of their message.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingforward.com\/poetry-writing\/breaking-grammar-rules-in-poetry-writing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breaks the rules<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Kids don\u2019t often have permission to disobey the rules of English, but poems can break away from sentence structure and can include made-up words, allowing kids a liberating means of expression. The loosening of rules is beneficial to English Language Learners, allowing them to express themselves outside of grammatical confinements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry helps develop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatdowedoallday.com\/how-to-memorize-poetry-with-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memorization skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in children. Older kids often have problems memorizing, whether it\u2019s multiplication tables or the Gettysburg Address. Little kids, though, are able to memorize nursery rhymes almost as soon as they can talk. If you can keep kids memorizing poems <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/benefits-memorizing-poetry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as they get older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that skill will serve them well throughout their lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry teaches the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@lyw.write\/the-economy-of-language-this-business-of-poetry-48cfa724969e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economy of language<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By creating poems with a specific structure, like a sonnet, limerick, cinquain, or haiku, children have to think about each word, finding the most effective way to communicate their ideas, while staying within the poem\u2019s strict form.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Poets in History<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many well-known people have contributed to the successes of poetry and are the reason the support of National Poetry Month spreads more and more each year. Here are a few of the greatest poets in history:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/british-history\/william-shakespeare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Shakespeare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is arguably the most well-known poet and playwright in history. He is known for the poetry within his plays like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo and Juliet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Othello<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and for his book of sonnets.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poets\/edgar-allan-poe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar Allan Poe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was an American author best known for his poems of horror and mystery. He wrote the famous poems <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Raven<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annabel Lee<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poets.org\/poetsorg\/poet\/emily-dickinson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Dickinson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became known for her poetry after her death since she spent most of her life as a recluse. Her most famous poems are<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hope Is the Thing with Feathers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I\u2019m Nobody! Who Are You?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poets\/robert-frost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Frost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was an American poet who is mainly known for his narrative poem, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Road Not Taken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He won four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry in his lifetime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newworldencyclopedia.org\/entry\/Carl_Sandburg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carl Sandburg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found beauty in the gritty\u00a0 urban life of early 20th century American cities; however, he also wrote poems for children and won a Pulitzer prize for his biography of Abraham Lincoln.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poets.org\/poetsorg\/poet\/e-e-cummings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E.E. Cummings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began writing poems at the age of 10. He is known for his unconventional punctuation and phrasing in his poems, and for not always using capital letters. Two examples of his great literary work are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i carry your heart with me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buffalo Bill\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/maya-angelou-9185388\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maya Angelou<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the more recent poets we celebrate on this day. Her famous literary works include a memoir on her life called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a poem for President Bill Clinton\u2019s inaugural ceremony, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Pulse of Morning<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In getting kids to love poetry, the worst thing to do is to make reading or memorizing poetry feel like a chore. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.educationalappstore.com\/best-apps\/5-best-poetry-apps-for-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available which will read poems to your kids on your phone or tablet.
