{"id":7354,"date":"2018-12-20T14:36:52","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T21:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lpatucson.org\/lakeside\/?p=7354"},"modified":"2018-12-20T17:03:45","modified_gmt":"2018-12-21T00:03:45","slug":"how-to-get-a-good-start-on-the-second-half-of-the-school-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lpatucson.org\/lakeside\/how-to-get-a-good-start-on-the-second-half-of-the-school-year\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Get a Good Start on the Second Half of the School Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ask most kids, \u201cWhen does one year end and another begin?\u201d and they\u2019ll probably tell you that the year begins in July or August, ends in May, with a chunk of summer between the end of one year and the beginning of the next.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Kids are way more aware of the school year than they are the calendar year, so it may be difficult to convey the significance of the December 31 transition from one year to the next.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, the new calendar year begins right in the middle of the academic year, so it\u2019s a perfect time for parents to help students evaluate the first half of the school year so they can regroup, rededicate themselves and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understood.org\/en\/school-learning\/choosing-starting-school\/moving-up\/7-tips-for-jump-starting-the-second-half-of-the-school-year#slide-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prepare for the second half<\/a>. It\u2019s also an ideal time to teach kids about making\u2014and sticking to\u2014new year\u2019s resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how you can help your student get a good start on the second half of the school year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Look back at the first half<\/strong>\u2013 Parents and children should reflect on the first half of the year and make a list of everything that went right and everything that went not-so-right. Analyze the elements that were involved in successful outcomes, so they can be used to create future strategies. Then, analyze the elements involved when things went wrong and how those factors can be avoided in the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have a meaningful discussion about school<\/strong> \u2013 Find out what your student likes and doesn\u2019t like about school. Discuss the academic, social, and behavioral aspects of school. What subjects are difficult? How does your student get along with classmates? If your child has suddenly started acting up in class\u2014or has suddenly become apathetic\u2014discuss the reasons for this change in behavior.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set new goals<\/strong> \u2013 Did you and your student set goals at the start of the school year? Did they achieve those goals? Create a new set of goals for the second half of the year. If your student set a goal of getting an \u201cA\u201d in math, but received a \u201cD,\u201d set a new goal of getting a \u201cC\u201d in the third quarter and a \u201cB\u201d in the fourth. Treat mid-year as a new beginning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Review organizational and study skills<\/strong> \u2013 Sometimes, the problems a child has can simply be lack of organization. Being unorganized can waste valuable time and can get students confused. Help your child <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordlearning.com\/organized-middle-school-students-parents\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">organize<\/a> their school supplies, then show them how to create a meaningful to-do list. Also review good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatschools.org\/gk\/articles\/study-skills-for-middle-school-and-beyond\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study skills<\/a> to ensure that your child always completes their homework and is prepared for tests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Going hand-in-hand with starting the second half of the school year is learning to make resolutions for the new calendar year. Did you help your child make resolutions last year? How many did they keep? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/holiday\/new-years\/resolution\/smart-new-years-resolutions-kids-can-make\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Making resolutions<\/a> for the new year is a self-improvement strategy that can be employed throughout one\u2019s life, and it\u2019s never too early to start.<\/p>\n<p>There are many suggestions for teaching kids how to make and keep resolutions. Possibly the most realistic and easiest to remember is the <a href=\"https:\/\/erhs.puyallup.k12.wa.us\/UserFiles\/Servers\/Server_445846\/File\/Resources\/Counseling%20&amp;%20Career%20Center\/Counseling\/Student%20Success%20Resources\/SMART_Goals_worksheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SMART<\/a> goals method, an acronym for the steps necessary for successful resolution\/goal setting.<\/p>\n<p>New year\u2019s resolutions should be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Specific<\/strong> \u2013 Often, children make resolutions that are very broad. \u201cI\u2019m going to spend more time on homework\u201d is too vague; \u201cI\u2019m going to spend two hours each night on homework\u201d is something that is \u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Measurable<\/strong> \u2013 If your child sets two hours per night for homework, it\u2019s very easy to determine if that goal has been met. If it\u2019s 9 p.m., and your student has been watching TV since 6 p.m., it\u2019s clear they haven\u2019t met their goal. Maybe the goal of two hours wasn\u2019t \u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Achievable<\/strong> \u2013 There\u2019s no point in setting goals that are unattainable. If your child\u2019s goal is to graduate 8th grade by the age of 10, but they\u2019re a solid \u201cC\u201d student, their goal will probably go unrealized. If your child can\u2019t sit still, then maybe a two-hour stretch of studying is too long. Maybe studying in eight 15-minute increments makes more sense because resolutions\/goals only work if they\u2019re \u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Realistic\/Relevant<\/strong> \u2013 Resolutions\/goals should be relevant to your child\u2019s life and should be realistic. It\u2019s nice that a 5th grader\u2019s goal is to be the first human on Mars, but perhaps making a resolution to get a \u201cB\u201d in English is more realistic and more relevant to their current situation. And goals are only relevant if they\u2019re \u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time-Based<\/strong> \u2013 Resolutions and goals should never be open-ended. Goals with an end date are measurable. Raising one\u2019s math grade from a \u201cC\u201d to a \u201cB\u201d is a worthy goal if it\u2019s going to happen by the end of the next quarter. If the timeframe isn\u2019t included, the goal becomes meaningless.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parents should communicate with teachers to see that students get a good start on the second half of the school year. It\u2019s not difficult to turn bad grades into good grades in the two quarters remaining. It simply takes all the players\u2014parents, teachers, and students\u2014working together to create a workable, achievable plan for a successful third and fourth quarter of
