The earlier kids learn to read, the better. The challenge is, not to teach kids to read, but to create an environment where kids will learn to love reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few statistics from the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferstfoundation.org\/resources\/fifty-top-literacy-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having books in the home is twice as important to a child\u2019s academic success as the father\u2019s education level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The single most significant factor influencing a child\u2019s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Books contain 50% more words which children are unlikely to encounter on primetime television.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an almost 90% probability a child will remain a poor reader at the end of the fourth grade if the child is a poor reader at the end of first grade.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nurturing and one-on-one attention from parents during reading aloud encourages children to form a positive association with books and reading later in life.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though developing a love of reading is so important, it seems like some children are reluctant readers practically from birth. How can parents foster this crucial skill in their children, creating lifetime reading enthusiasts?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Let Kids Read What they Like<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to create a positive connection to reading, which is accomplished by allowing kids to<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.namontessori.com\/benefits-letting-kids-choose-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">read what they enjoy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2026 within reason. If kids want to read comic books, graphic novels, sports stories, or science fiction, as long as parents approve of the content, it\u2019s okay. The more kids read, the more their reading skills will improve and the more they will want to read; consequently, the first goal is to get them reading. If comic books can get your child enthused about reading, then let them read comic books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Let Kids See You Reading<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult to tell a child reading is important if the adults in the house never read. Parents should regularly turn off the TV, letting children see they have reserved time to read. Kids love to imitate adults, and if they see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jordanshapiro\/2014\/05\/13\/kids-dont-read-books-because-parents-dont-read-books\/#5e8c247325d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parents reading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019ll want to do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Turn the Sound Off and Closed Captioning On<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let your child watch their favorite TV show with the sound off and<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.readingrockets.org\/article\/captioning-support-literacy-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">captioning on<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it necessary to read the dialog to know what\u2019s going on. Get the whole family involved, with everyone taking on a different character, using that character\u2019s voice. Be certain to help them through any words they may be stuck on to avoid frustration. Their favorite shows will take on a whole new attraction when presented by your family\u2019s actors\u2019 workshop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Find Funny Books to Read With Your Kids<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids love to laugh, so find<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/lists\/funny-books-for-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silly books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to read with your child. It\u2019s a good idea to read through the books first so that you know where the funny parts are, since kids\u2019 books are written for kids, and you don\u2019t want to be the one not in on the joke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Enlist Technology<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids may be more comfortable with an iPad in their hands than with a book, so let them read on whatever media they prefer. Just about everything is available as an e-book, often for free.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/epic-unlimited-books-for-kids\/id719219382?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an iTunes app featuring access to over 20,000 free, high-quality children\u2019s books. There are also many<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsworldfun.com\/ebooks.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free kids\u2019 books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which can be read or downloaded to any computer, phone, or tablet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing can guarantee your child will be successful academically or in the career they choose, but if they develop a love of reading at an early age, they\u2019ll have a much better chance at accomplishing great things throughout their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Encourage Kids to Read Poetry<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nursery rhymes, songs \u2026 kids love poetry, probably without even realizing it. Reading and writing poetry has many developmental benefits:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry not only develops<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/my.optimus-education.com\/using-poetry-support-literacy-and-language-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">language skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also has rhythm and sounds that work together for more effective communication. Many of the world\u2019s greatest speakers \u2014 Martin Luther King, Jr., Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, Barak Obama \u2014 have a rhythm and musicality to their speech which increases the power of their message.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingforward.com\/poetry-writing\/breaking-grammar-rules-in-poetry-writing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breaks the rules<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Kids don\u2019t often have permission to disobey the rules of English, but poems can break away from sentence structure and can include made-up words, allowing kids a liberating means of expression. The loosening of rules is beneficial to English Language Learners, allowing them to express themselves outside of grammatical confinements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry helps develop<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/scholar-base.com\/5-benefits-of-poetry-recitation-in-a-childs-literacy-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memorization skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in children. Older kids often have problems memorizing, whether it&#8217;s multiplication tables or the Gettysburg Address. Little kids, though, are able to memorize nursery rhymes almost as soon as they can talk. If you can keep kids memorizing poems<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tutorhunt.com\/resource\/22593\/\/blog\/in-praise-of-memorization-10-proven-brain-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as they get older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that skill will serve them well throughout their lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry teaches <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economy of language<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By creating poems with a specific<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.writersdigest.com\/whats-new\/list-of-50-poetic-forms-for-poets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">structure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like a sonnet, limerick, cinquain, or haiku, children have to think about each word, finding the most effective way to communicate their ideas, while staying within the poem\u2019s strict form.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worst thing to do is to make reading or memorizing poetry feel like a chore or like a punishment. There are<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/parentingchaos.com\/poetry-apps-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available which will read poems to your kids on your phone or tablet.
