Some people are terrible athletes, some are poor in art or music, and some have difficulty with math or science. Conversely, some people are superb athletes, unbelievably creative artists and musicians, or show brilliance in math and science. That\u2019s just the way life is. Not everyone is good at everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, you wouldn\u2019t always know it. Starting in the late 80s, America\u2019s approach to child-rearing took a radical turn which would affect every aspect of a child\u2019s life. At home, parents began praising everything a child did; in sports, youngsters started getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bigthink.com\/culture-religion\/participation-trophy-and-child-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participation trophies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, awarded for just showing up; in school, no one received a grade below a B, and everyone made the honor roll.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All that praise and all those trophies probably made kids feel pretty good about themselves. The problem was, all that self-esteem was based on fabricated success. The kids that were never able to hit or catch a baseball thought they were great baseball players because they received trophies that said so. The kids that could barely draw a stick figure considered themselves to be a great artist because they had blue ribbons that said so. The kids that struggled with long division thought they were math geniuses because they received all As and Bs in math.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is self-esteem and self-confidence, based on nothing, a healthy thing? In retrospect, the answer seems to be \u201cNo!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thinking now is that, since real life doesn\u2019t have the ability to falsely sustain anyone\u2019s feeling of inflated self-worth, the \u201cevery kid gets a trophy\u201d method of parenting and education is just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news5cleveland.com\/news\/originals\/participation-trophies-are-a-controversial-part-of-youth-sports-heres-how-we-can-improve-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">setting kids\u00a0 up to fail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they get out into the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/face-it\/201111\/do-we-all-deserve-gold-setting-kids-fail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that, rather than give every kid a trophy, hand every kid a list of lessons they should memorize as they begin their journey through life. Here are a couple of the lessons listed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life is not fair\u2014get used to it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Television is not real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should parents do to provide their children with real self-esteem and real self-confidence? First, recognize that self-esteem and self-confidence are different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible for someone to consider themselves to be a good person\u2014based on their kindness, their generosity, their willingness to help others, their contributions to the community and to those in need\u2014and still lack confidence. Conversely, one can have a great deal of self-confidence, and still have low self-esteem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A well-rounded human should have both and both should be based in reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Self-Esteem<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves. During the everyone-gets-a-trophy years, it was thought that high self-esteem would lead to accomplishments. A generation later, that thinking is understood to be backwards: accomplishments lead to high self-esteem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/familytlc.net\/self_esteem_preteen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family TLC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relates the following cautionary tale: Psychologist, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drlawrencebalter.com\/about.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Lawrence Balter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tells a story of parents, \u201cwho made a big fuss about a poem their child had written. They talked about it for days, made copies to send to friends and relatives. But the child never wrote another poem, apparently convinced that he could never again meet the extraordinary standards implied by his parents\u2019\u00a0gushing enthusiasm<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Family TLC, just telling kids how\u00a0great\u00a0they are, rather than praising them for actual achievement, can backfire in another way. When children who have an unrealistic, inflated opinion of themselves are rejected or mocked by others, they are likely to become hostile, aggressive, and sometimes even violent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.todaysparent.com\/family\/parenting\/how-to-build-your-childs-self-esteem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s Parent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellfamily.com\/building-self-esteem-in-tweens-3288355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verywell Family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> present strategies parents can use to build real, lifelong self-esteem in children, suggesting that parents:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t over-praise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Self-esteem comes from feeling loved, secure and developing competence. Parents can provide the first two, but developing competence takes time and effort. Over-praising lowers the bar. If parents heap praise on a child, even when parents know the child hasn\u2019t given their best effort, the child thinks they\u2019re already doing a great job and won\u2019t be motivated to do better.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Let kids make their own choices and take healthy risks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 If it\u2019s raining and your child wants to go out without a raincoat or umbrella, let them go. Getting soaked to the bone can be an educational experience they won\u2019t care for and next time, they\u2019ll ask for that rain gear.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t worry about failure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Many parents think failure will hurt their child\u2019s self-esteem, but failure is the quickest way to build self-esteem. Overcoming obstacles and readjusting goals to make them achievable will help children feel good about themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be a good role model <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Make certain your own positive sense of self is evident to your children. Don\u2019t make negative self-comments. Children learn from watching their parents, and if parents don\u2019t feel good about themselves, their children will have a much harder time developing their own self-worth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Self Confidence<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-confidence is how we feel about our abilities. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/hide-and-seek\/201510\/self-confidence-versus-self-esteem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out, courage, which is the realm of the unknown, is the precursor to self-confidence, the realm of the known. For example, today you may be considered a great public speaker, yet there was once a time when you had never spoken in public. It took courage to speak in public the first few times, but as you became more comfortable\u2014as the unknown became known\u2014you became a better, more confident speaker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the tactics for increasing your child\u2019s self-confidence are similar to those for increasing self-esteem; however, it\u2019s important to remember the distinction and the difference in focus between the two: self-esteem is about ourselves and our self-image; self-confidence is about our abilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/toddlers-preschoolers\/development\/fear\/secrets-of-confident-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ways-to-raise-a-more-confident-child-2016-3#open-the-door-to-new-experiences-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both offer some helpful ideas for building self-confidence:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nurture special interests.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Help your child discover their own talents and qualities and teach them to value their own strengths. Also teach them that feeling special doesn\u2019t mean feeling better than others because everyone has their own special abilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Encourage curiosity.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Parents may get tired of their children\u2019s constant stream of questions, but as children learn and understand the mysteries of unknown realms, their self-confidence increases. For example, a firefly is a mysterious thing, but explaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-and-why-do-fireflies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how and why a firefly lights up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gives a child an insight into the natural world. Understanding what was once mysterious, builds confidence in the ability to understand other mysteries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Promote problem solving.<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myrna Shure, Ph.D. and author of\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raising a Thinking Child<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says that her research has found that you can even teach a young child how to solve problems themselves. The key is to let the child find solutions. It\u2019s good for parents to guide children in their thinking by pointing out possible consequences to various solutions, but ultimately, let children solve their own problems. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Identify the reason for a poor performance. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy for a child who does poorly on a math test to blame their own inadequacies. A child who thinks they did poorly because they\u2019re stupid or the subject is hopelessly difficult is fostering low self-confidence. Instead, stress that a poor performance is usually the result of poor preparation and offer your help in preparing for the next test.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Find opportunities to spend more time with adults. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While kids are always more comfortable hanging out with their friends, it\u2019s just as important for them to spend time with a variety of adults. Since children may only have experience talking to parents and teachers, being able to communicate with other adults will provide them with different points of view. Plus, kids feel more confident in their opinions when they\u2019re accepted as equals by adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Focus on the positive.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Be specific in pointing out the positive side of a problem. For example, if your child is having issues with math, instead of saying something like, \u201cCheer up! The school year will be over in a few months,\u201d explain that everyone learns at their own pace, and offer to spend time helping with math homework.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try, try again.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Encourage children to try doing things their own way, face challenges and take healthy risks. Teach them the old saying, \u201cSuccess is going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychologist Erik Erikson, in his eight stages of development, focuses on universal conflicts that occur at various stages of life. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplypsychology.org\/Erik-Erikson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply Psychology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Erikson theorizes that the \u201csuccessful completion of each stage results in a healthy personality and the acquisition of basic virtues. Basic virtues are characteristic strengths which the ego can use to resolve subsequent crises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFailure to successfully complete a stage can result in a reduced ability to complete further stages and therefore an unhealthy personality and sense of self.\u00a0 These stages, however, can be resolved successfully at a later time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth stage, whose basic virtue is competency, occurs during the early school years. Labeled as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry vs. Inferiority<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/erikson-eight-stages-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains the conflict like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs children grow in independence, they become increasingly aware of themselves as individuals. They begin to compare themselves with others.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children who are accomplished compared to their peers can develop\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/self-confidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-confidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and pride. Praise for their achievements can boost their\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/self-esteem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-esteem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inferiority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children who do not achieve certain milestones may doubt their abilities or self-worth. When children are constantly criticized, they may develop feelings of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/inferiority-complex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inferiority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As children approach this milestone fork in the road, it\u2019s crucial to see that they\u2019re on a path of good self-esteem and self-confidence, which will serve them the rest of their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While teachers and other adults may have some influence over children, it\u2019s really up to parents to provide the proper direction which will point a child down the path which will lead to future success.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here\u2019s a harsh fact: Not everyone is good at everything.
