You always try to do the right thing for your kids, but sometimes outside forces stack the deck against you. Here\u2019s an example: You want your kids to eat a healthy diet so that they grow up to have long, illness-free, productive lives; however, the food industry is working diligently to undermine your efforts. It\u2019s difficult to combat the food industry. They have enormous resources which you, as a parent, probably don\u2019t have, but knowing their tactics is a good place to start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t a lot of recent statistics on how the food industry markets to kids. Most of the studies are nearly a decade old, so those studies don\u2019t even consider the increase in online and social media marketing that kids see every day. But let\u2019s look at some statistics provided by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preventioninstitute.org\/facts-junk-food-marketing-and-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Marketing<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The food and beverage industry spend approximately $2 billion per year marketing to children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fast food industry spends more than $5 million every day marketing unhealthy foods to children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids watch an average of over 10-16 food-related television ads every day (averaging 4,000 per year).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly all (98 percent) of food advertisements viewed by children are for products that are high in fat, sugar or sodium. Most (79 percent) are low in fiber.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Effects<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 40% of children\u2019s diets come from added sugars and unhealthy fats.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 21% of youth age 6-19 eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mere 12% of grains consumed by children are whole.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study found that when children were exposed to television content with food advertising, they consumed 45 percent more food than children exposed to content with non-food advertising.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/118\/6\/2563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, kids see about 40,000 ads per year across all media, and half of those ads are for food. Out of those 20,000 food ads\u2014which is about 55 per day\u2014less than 3% are for healthy foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ads kids see on TV make up only a small percent of the total food ads they\u2019re exposed to, but those ads are very influential. Kids watching cartoons for 80 minutes every day will see more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Health_News\/2018\/04\/17\/Kids-bombarded-with-junk-food-advertising-research-finds\/6071523974129\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">800 ads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for fast food restaurants in a year. A 2013 report from the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy &amp; Obesity showed that McDonald\u2019s spends 2.7 times more to advertise its products than is spent by all fruit, vegetables, bottled water, and milk advertisers combined, and less than 1% of all kids\u2019 meal combinations from fast food restaurants met recommended nutrition standards. You can download a summary of the report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwjf.org\/content\/dam\/farm\/reports\/reports\/2013\/rwjf408549\/subassets\/rwjf408549_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January, 2019, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/01\/ads-targeting-black-hispanic-youth-almost-exclusively-promote-unhealthy-food-drinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Connecticut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Drexel University, and the University of Texas Health Science Center issued a report showing that the food industry targeted minorities in their ads for junk food. The report says that 86 percent of food advertising spent on African-American television programming and 82 percent of advertising on Spanish-language stations, were almost exclusively for fast food, candy, sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Parents Can Do<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can be done to combat the onslaught of ads for sugary cereals, sugary beverages, sugary or high-fat snacks, and high-fat fast foods?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step to ensure children have a healthy diet is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyeating.org\/Healthy-Kids\/Kids-Healthy-Eating\/Feeding-Your-Family\/Article-Viewer\/Article\/271\/Healthy-Eating-Starts-with-Parent-Role-Models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead by example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Kids love to imitate adults, so the biggest step that parents can take in creating a healthy nutritional environment is to eat the right foods in front of children. Since parents can\u2019t be at their children\u2019s side 24-hours a day, a good example can be set at the family dinner table each night. Serve healthy foods at home and eat together as a family so that kids can see mom and dad enjoying fruits, vegetables, and beans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five more positive tips include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Praise choices that are healthy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;\u00a0 When children choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains, or low-fat dairy as a snack, let them know they\u2019ve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/features\/10-ways-to-raise-food-smart-kids#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made the right choice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Get kids involved in cooking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; When kids <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/teaching-kids-to-cook-may-make-them-eat-healthier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help in the kitchen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019re more likely to eat what they\u2019ve helped to make. It also gives parents time to teach their children the benefits of healthy eating.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Stock-up on healthy foods &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Younger children can only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/recipes\/nutrition\/kids\/best-foods-to-stock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eat what is in the house<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Keep fruit visible and keep nuts or granola around on which to snack.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Steer kids toward healthy options &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you only have healthful foods at home it will be easy to offer tortilla chips instead of potato chips or to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodstart.org.au\/news-and-advice\/september-2017\/steering-children-towards-healthy-food-choices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">redirect their attention away<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from candy and toward a sweet fruit like strawberries or mangoes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Don\u2019t put restrictions on junk food &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing is more tempting to a child than something they feel is forbidden. Once a week, make a healthy pizza and let them know that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/recipes\/scoop-on-food\/why-restricting-junk-food-can-backfire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moderation in eating junk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the key.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helen Sanders of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Ambition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthambition.com\/light-and-healthy-afternoon-snacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy afternoon snacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are another good way to keep kids on the right nutritional track. Since parents are often extremely busy, she emphasizes keeping the preparation to a minimum. Her recommendations include: An apple, Greek yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, sunflower seeds, avocados, and blueberries.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/recipes\/scoop-on-food\/how-junk-food-advertising-harms-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine suggests avoiding ads whenever possible. With ad-blockers, DVRs and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, shielding your kids from ads is easier than it\u2019s ever been. They also suggest talking to kids about the role of advertising, addressing specific ads whenever possible. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests questions like, \u201cDo you think sports drinks will make you a better athlete?\u201d and \u201cDo you think these Olympic athletes actually eat a lot of fast food?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important food tip is to view food as nutrition first.\u00a0 Your children will appreciate your guidance as they get older and lead illness-free lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re a parent, you have a tough job.
