Job Description
La Paloma Academy Lakeside is seeking a dedicated, patient, and vigilant 1:1 Special Education Paraprofessional to provide comprehensive support for an elementary school student with autism for the upcoming school year. The ideal candidate will be committed to fostering a safe, positive, and structured learning environment, enabling the student to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
This position requires a high level of engagement and constant close proximity to the student throughout the entire school day to ensure their safety and facilitate their participation in all classroom and school activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide constant, direct 1:1 support and supervision to an elementary school student with autism in the general education classroom, during specials (art, SEL, P.E.), lunch, recess, and all transitions.
- Maintain close physical proximity (within arm’s reach) to the student at all times to ensure their safety and provide immediate behavioral and sensory support.
- Implement the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) with fidelity, as directed by the special education teacher and support team.
- Assist the student with academic tasks, breaking down assignments into manageable steps and using provided accommodations and modifications.
- Proactively anticipate and de-escalate challenging behaviors using positive behavior support strategies.
- Support the student’s communication needs
- Facilitate positive social interactions with peers and encourage participation in group activities.
- Accurately collect data on academic, behavioral, and social goals daily.
- Collaborate effectively with the entire educational team, including teachers, specialists, and the student’s family.

Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- A valid IVP (Identity Verified Prints) Fingerprint Clearance Card is required, as well as an Associate’s degree OR a passing score on a state-approved paraprofessional assessment.
- Exceptional patience, empathy, and a calm demeanor, especially in stressful situations.
- Physical ability to stay on your feet, move quickly, and keep pace with an active young child for the entire school day. This may include kneeling, crouching, and light lifting.
- Strong reliability and an excellent attendance record.
Preferred:
- Previous experience as a 1:1 paraprofessional.
- Experience working with children with autism or significant behavioral needs.
- Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles.
