Why is school attendance important?
As Tucson’s top-rated charter school, we depend on parents to ensure that children attend school every day and arrive on time. School attendance is very important in children’s education. Missing school affects students’ grades, social skills, and confidence.
What should I do if my child arrives late to school?
Students who arrive late to La Paloma Academy Central and are not seated when school starts will be considered tardy. Parents must sign tardy students in upon their arrival. We ask, in these instances, that parents park their car and come to the front office.
What is considered truancy and what are the consequences?
If students are frequently absent, attendance officers may discuss the legal repercussions of truancy, and both parents and students may face citations and potential court involvement. Habitual truancy is defined as having five or more unexcused absences, while excessive absence is defined as being absent more than 10% of the school days.
How do I access my child's school records?
Parents of students at La Paloma Academy Central have the right to inspect and review all their student’s education records, as well as all other rights guaranteed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. What rights do homeless students have?
La Paloma Academy Central provides an educational environment that treats all students with dignity and respect. Every homeless student has the same right to free and appropriate educational opportunities as all other students. This commitment to the educational rights of homeless children, youth, and unaccompanied youth applies to all services, programs, and activities offered.
A student may be considered eligible for services as a “Homeless Child or Youth” under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act if he or she is presently living:
- In a shelter, temporary shared housing, or transitional living program
- In a hotel/motel, campground, or similar situation due to lack of alternatives
- At a bus station, park, car, or abandoned building
According to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Act, eligible students have rights to:
- Immediate enrollment: Documentation and immunization records cannot serve as a barrier to enrollment in school.
- Remain enrolled in his/her selected school for the duration of homelessness, and until the end of the academic year upon which they are permanently housed.
- Participate in programs for which they are eligible, including Title I, National School Lunch Program, etc.
- Transportation Services: A McKinney-Vento eligible student attending his/her School of Origin has a right to transportation to and from the School of Origin.
- Dispute Resolution: If you disagree with school officials about enrollment, transportation, or fair treatment of a homeless child or youth, you may file a complaint with the school district. The school district must respond and attempt to resolve it quickly. During the dispute, the student must be immediately enrolled in the school and provided transportation until the matter is resolved. The Homeless Liaison will assist you in making decisions, providing notice of any appeal process, and filling out dispute forms.

How does my child receive the student handbook?
At the start of the school year, your child will receive a student handbook that outlines the classroom and school rules, as well as student behavior expectations at La Paloma Academy Central. Both students and parents are required to sign a statement of awareness. It’s crucial that the school, the student, and the families collaborate to ensure every student’s success.
What is the school uniform policy?
At La Paloma Academy Central, all students are required to wear uniforms daily. Our philosophy is that uniforms foster a family-like atmosphere, enhance safety, simplify mornings for families, and promote professionalism in academics. Students are expected to arrive at school in uniform each morning. Uniform shirts are available for purchase in the front office. We also organize various spirit weeks and provide opportunities for students to dress down.
Our student handbook outlines the appropriate dress code for non-uniform days, which are communicated well in advance to families. Please ensure your student is dressed in a uniform each day.
